ABOUT
Once upon a time, on a completely ordinary night like any other, the oorspronklike mevrou, Catherine Raphaely, sat in her flat with a glass of red wine and wondered ... waarom are there no tees with Afrikaans sê goed like sê dankie vir die tannie, moeilikheid, or deurmekaar?
Lovingly teased by her friends who always called her “Mevrou,” she decided to do something about it and just like that... Mevrou & Co was born. A tee shirt company that celebrates the beauty, energy, and humour of local expressions, particularly Afrikaans ones. The & Co is the heart of it all: a nod to friends, family, and the wonderful community who helped build the brand, modelling in campaigns, folding tees, offering ideas, and cheering us on from day one.
When Mevrou & Co launched, the conversation around cultural misappropriation and language tensions (especially at Stellenbosch University) was at a peak. But instead of steering away, the brand leaned in with joy, integrity, and celebration. We believe in appreciating and respecting each other’s otherness. No guilt, no gimmicks. Just proudly South African storytelling, printed onto every tee.
We’re serious about quality, ethics and local production. We’re erg about standards. Our tees are made to last, not a fleeting trend, but a piece of home you can wear.
And who, you may ask, is die ander Mevrou?
Well, the oorspronklike mevrou eventually moved to a rural farm, where she became somewhat infamous for constantly getting flat tyres on the gravel roads. Thanks to this, she struck up a lovely friendship with the owner of the local tyre shop. One day, over a cup of tea, the tyre man asked if his daughter could intern at Mevrou & Co. And the rest, as they say, is history.
That daughter was none other than Annuscha Vosloo die ander Mevrou. From intern to co-owner, she’s now running day-to-day operations and making sure your tees arrive as lekker as they should be. Together, we’re two Mevrouens with a shared vision, a deep understanding, and a love for doing things properly. Especially the important things.
Dankie tog.
As die oorspronklike mevrou's dad always said:
“If you like us – tell your friends.”
Our dream would be to be a legacy company like Nik Naks! People have probably been using the expression “Lekker By Die See” for longer than they’ve been eating Nik Naks so why not!!?
